L’Américain Floyd Mayweather, invaincu depuis 21 ans, a remporté son très médiatisé combat contre le spécialiste du MMA Conor McGregor.

Il ne devait pas y avoir de match. Finalement, l’affrontement ultra-médiatisé entre le boxeur Floyd Mayweather et le spécialiste du MMA (Mixed martial arts) Conor McGregor a été un peu plus serré que prévu, samedi à Las Vegas. Et au bout du 10ème round, c’est l’Américain, invaincu depuis 21 ans qui a assommé l’Irlandais, fatigué, pour l’emporter par K.O. technique (arrêt du combat par l’arbitre). Sa dernière victoire pour son dernier combat en carrière. McGregor a fait illusion. Alors que certains observateurs annonçaient un combat « ridicule » ou joué d’avance, Conor McGregor, qui disputait à 29 ans son premier combat de boxe, a surpris tout le monde en prenant le meilleur départ. Plus tranchant et soutenu par la grande majorité des 20.000 spectateurs de la T-Mobile Arena, l’Irlandais a pris le dessus sur Mayweather, qui n’avait pas boxé depuis son combat contre Andre Berto en septembre 2015, lors des premiers rounds. Une stratégie offensive qui a sans doute contribué à fatiguer McGregor, habitué à des combats plus courts. Plus stratégique, Mayweather a laissé son adversaire s’épuiser avant de reprendre le combat en main. Mayweather serein. À partir du cinquième round, l’Américain, sacré douze fois champion du monde dans cinq catégories de poids différentes, a multiplié les coups, forçant Conor McGregor à se reposer derrière sa garde, voire à agripper son adversaire pour avoir un peu de répit. Finalement, au dixième round, Mayweather a cessé de jouer. Peu après la reprise, il a asséné une première droite à la temps de l’Irlandais, le faisant vaciller, avant de doubler la mise au même endroit. Dans les cordes, il a continué à harceler McGregor jusqu’à ce que l’arbitre dise stop. À 40 ans, Mayweather dépasse par la même occasion le record de Rocky Marciano, avec 50 victoires en 50 combats. Leur combat avait été rebaptisé « Money Fight », ou « combat de l’argent » en référence aux recettes astronomiques qu’il a déjà générées. McGregor, ancien apprenti-plombier de Dublin, va empocher 100 millions de dollars et Mayweather devrait encaisser plus de 200 millions de dollars après partages des énormes recettes tirées notamment des droits TV. Retraite et Hall of Fame. À l’issue de ce très lucratif combat, Floyd Mayweather a assuré que ce combat était bien son dernier, lui qui était sorti de sa retraite pour répondre au défi de McGregor, et rendant hommage à son adversaire du soir. « C’est vraiment mon dernier combat. C’était un partenaire idéal pour une dernière danse. (…) Maintenant j’espère entrer au Hall of Fame », a lâché l’Américain avec le sourire. De son côté, McGregor a reconnu sa défaite avec fair-play, estimant quand même que le combat aurait pu aller à son terme : « L’arbitre aurait pu me laisser continuer car je ne suis pas tombé. Je n’étais pas si loin au niveau de la boxe, je n’ai pas pris de dégâts physiques. Mais j’étais un peu fatigué ». On craignait une mascarade, elle n’a pas eu lieu. Le combat entre un Floyd Mayweather sorti de sa retraite et la star du MMA, Conor McGregor a finalement été spectaculaire, intense et beaucoup plus équilibré que prévu, ce dimanche matin à Las Vegas. Plusieurs interrogations accompagnaient pourtant ce combat de tous les excès : L’Irlandais, star des arts martiaux mixtes, allait-il s’adapter à la boxe anglaise ? Pouvait-il tenir face à un adversaire aussi expérimenté ? Et Mayweather, aujourd’hui âgé de 40 ans, allait-il tenir le coup physiquement face à un adversaire de 11 ans son aîné ? Floyd Mayweather a battu Conor McGregor dimanche matin à Las Vegas par k.o. technique à la 10e reprise.

Au fil des dix rounds qu’a duré le combat, les deux boxeurs ont répondu positivement à ces questions. S’il a parfois eu des réflexes de MMA et qu’il a été repris par l’arbitre à plusieurs reprises, McGregor s’est montré très solide sur le ring. L’Irlandais a même été plus offensif que son adversaire lors des trois premiers rounds, gênant l’Américain par son allonge, le touchant plusieurs fois, comme sur un uppercut du gauche en contre (3e reprise).

Pas de quoi affoler Mayweather toutefois. À partir du 4e round, «Money» a commencé à avancer sur McGregor, ne le laissant plus être à l’initiative, élevant le rythme du combat. Gêné, l’Irlandais a, dans un premier temps, montré qu’il pouvait être un excellent défenseur, bloquant et parant les coups de son adversaire. Puis, à partir du 7e round, visiblement émoussé physiquement, il a commencé à encaisser plus de coups (deux droites en début de 7e round). Le 9e round a failli être fatal pour lui, mais l’Irlandais, debout, a tenu bon. C’est finalement en début de 10e round que l’arbitre a interrompu le combat alors que McGregor était à nouveau en grande difficulté.
